Suddenly everyone in the family becomes a building expert and every friend has an opinion on something to look out for. Without us (my wife and I) knowing it, we needed a guide and experienced calm ear in the materialisation of our plans with building our first own house. 

It is inevitable that there will be issues and slight misunderstandings in these types of projects, but through the entire process of about 14 months, Dirco Rautenbach was our find and guide. As a young man, his wisdom exceeded the expectation initially forged in our heads. We had a huge misunderstanding regarding quite a big financial element in the building process, which he played out marvellously by using his other building sites to absorb the material wrongly ordered and limiting the losses to our side to the absolute minimum.

Once the building was done and the job finalised, Dirco’s pride in his work forced him to attend to the 3 or 4 issues that emerged as we moved into our dream house, without being compensated as it was part of the customer service approach we became accustomed to. Leaving our dream house in Potchefstroom after living in it for just 8 months, before work forced us to move to Cape Town, the biggest regret we had about this move was that green house by the stream in the estate…as our kids will remind us regularly.
